Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "WHITES UTICA," New York State origin, circa 1865, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a fan-tailed bird perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. A faint 3 1/2" line on underside, which form a "Y" at base on side of jar and connects to a second long, very faint line running vertically on the reverse. A minor in-the-firing base chip on reverse. Two other minor chips to bottom edge. A minor nick to one handle.
