Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration, Stamped "S. HART / FULTON", New York State origin, circa 1860, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of two crossed birds including a looping flourish below. Heavily-slip-trailed detail to wings, surrounded by a spotted border. Slip-trailed "4" to shoulder. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Includes salt-glazed stoneware lid. Churn with reglued pieces on underside as well as a hairline, which extends across underside and 2 1/2" up front of churn. Significant restoration to reverse. A 2" area of flaking on right side of churn at base. Two minor chips on interior of rim, one of which occurred in the firing. A few minor nicks to exterior of rim. A small worm spot to end of one handle. A small glazed-over ping near base on front. Lid with shallow chips and restored cracks.
