Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Stenciled Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "NORTH BAY", John C. Waelde, North Bay, NY, circa 1865, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a stenciled design of a crested bird with turned head, perched on a slip-trailed branch. The cobalt slip on the bird is applied with a sponge, creating a visually-appealing dappled appearance. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. A 1 1/4" inverted Y-shaped line to reverse of spout. A long horizontal line at base. A 1" in-the-firing chip to side of jug. A 3/4" piece of clay adhered to handle.
