Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "ITHACA, N.Y.", third quarter 19th century, cylindrical form with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and flared rim, decorated with a folky slip-trailed design of a bird with tall crest and turned head, perched on a flowering branch accented with spots. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Unusual maker's mark, appealing design, and superb color. Excellent condition with white residue on interior (either water glass or paint) as well as a curved, in-the-firing clay separation on underside, not visible on interior, and some glazed-over lines on interior, not visible on exterior.
