Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK & Co / ROCHESTER N.Y.", circa 1845, cylindrical jar with flared rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a flowering plant with heavily-spotted sunflower blossom and smaller, fan-shaped flower. Slip-trailed "3." at shoulder. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. A boldly-decorated example of early Rochester stoneware. A 1 3/4" base chip on reverse. Two large rim chips on reverse. A thin 9" crack from rim on reverse, which includes a long chip along the crack on interior. An approximately 7" long inverted Y-shaped line on reverse. An additional long thin line on reverse. A small glazed-over iron ping on reverse. A network of thin cracks to right of decoration on front. Wear to inner rim, where a lid would rest.
