Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Willow Tree Decoration, Stamped "CLARK & Co. / ROCHESTER", New York State origin, circa 1840, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a folky brushed design of a willow tree ascending the jar's front. Brushed cobalt number 2 to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Wonderful decoration and desirable maker. A 1 3/8" hairline from rim on side of jar. Two minor glazed-over surface flakes to front. A small chip to interior of rim. Several chips to inner rim where a lid would rest.
