Scarce Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Deer Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.", circa 1885, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a deer with large rack and heavily-spotted body, leaping above a stylized ground. Slip-trailed number 5 above. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Desirable maker and design. Top-to-bottom stained crack from rim on front, extending 4" onto underside. A few rim chips.
