Possibly Unique Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Tree and Face Decoration, Stamped "F. STETZENMEYER & Co. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.", circa 1850, ovoid jug with tapered spout, decorated with a folky slip-trailed design of a willow tree with stylized human profile below. Slip-trailed "2" to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Decorations other than floral motifs are considered highly unusual in Frederick Stetzenmeyer's work. A faint, approximately 8 1/2" line extending from shoulder through right side of decoration. A few other faint lines to shoulder. A small chip to bottom edge of spout molding. A minor base chip. A 5/8" in-the-firing iron ping to side of jug.
