Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Cobalt 1853 Date, Stamped "A.E. SMITH & SONS, / MANUFACTURERS / 38 Peck Slip, N.Y.," Norwalk, CT origin, 1853, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with wreath-like brushwork above the date "1853". Light cobalt accent to maker's mark. Few dated examples of Norwalk, CT stoneware are known. Large raised star-shaped crack on right side of jar, portions of which are possibly reglued. This damage includes two chips. One thin crack extends off from this damage onto right side of jar's front. A 9 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. A 6 1/4" fork-shaped crack from rim on reverse. A 1 1/2" fork-shaped hairline from rim above right handle, possibly visible on interior. Additional large, meandering hairlines to, reverse, left side, and front base area of jar. A small rim chip on reverse.
