Rare Eight-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Keg-Form Cooler, Stamped "SMITH & DAY / NORWALK", Connecticut origin, circa 1840, highly-ovoid form with tooled banding and applied, wheel-thrown bung hole. Cobalt highlights to banding, bunghole, and maker's mark. Incised "8" on top of rim. A difficult-to-find form from this maker. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased decades ago by the consignor. A 9" crack on underside, continuing into base of bunghole. This damage includes two small reglued pieces to bung hole and a 2 1/2" hairline, which extends to right of bung hole. Some minor in-the-firing chipping to top edge. An additional 2 1/2" hairline at base on reverse, continuing 1 1/2" onto underside. Some small chips to inner edge of flange-like rim. Shallow in-the-firing chipping to base. H 16".
