Scarce One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "S.C. BROWN / HUNTINGTON, / L.I.", circa 1879-1882, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed tulip below the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark of Stephen C. Brown. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Literature: Illustrated on page 44, fig. 51 of USEFUL ART Long Island Pottery, Cynthia Aarps Corbett, Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, 1985. Excellent condition with a minor nick on interior of rim.
