Unusual Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Circular Floral Decoration, Stamped "BROWN BROTHERS / HUNTINGTON / L.I.", circa 1870-1885, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed, pinwheel-shaped floral design. This decoration, which features the classic Brown Brothers flower, is unusual in its composition. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Literature: Pictured on p. 42, fig. 44 of USEFUL ART: LONG ISLAND POTTERY, Cynthia Arps Corbett, Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, 1985. Significant restoration to reverse, sides, and rim.
