Unusual Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Foliate Decoration, Stamped "SWAN & STATES / STONINGTON", CT origin, circa 1825, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout and ribbed handle, decorated with a Manhattan-inspired incised foliate design emanating from a turnip or heart shaped base. A second lightly-incised design, in the form of a leafy branch, is partially visible to the right of this decoration. The majority of it was rubbed away by the potter prior to the firing. A few base chips. A large, wide spider crack on right side of jug, which continues onto underside, where it forms a Y. Heavy chipping to spout. Thin spider lines to shoulder on right side of jug. A small surface chip or stone ping to left of decoration with small star-shaped series of lines emanating from it. A glazed-over iron ping to shoulder. Some staining.
