Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Foliate Decoration, Stamped Twice "SWAN & STATES / STONINGTON", Connecticut origin, circa 1825, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, footed base, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate design based on earlier Manhattan, NY examples. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Incised "3" on rim. Impressed on both sides with Swan & States maker's mark, an unusual treatment. Excellent condition with a tiny rim nick.
