Very Rare One-Gallon Presentation Stoneware Jug with Incised Floral Decoration, Stamped "A. STATES", Stonington, CT, first quarter 19th century, ovoid form with heavily-tooled spout and ribbed handle, decorated with a delicately-incised and cobalt-highlighted flowering plant design with quatrefoil motifs at base and between the stems. Incised "E R S" above, presumably for a member of the States family. Cobalt highlights to incised initials, maker's mark, and handle terminals. One of a very few presentation pieces known from the States Pottery of Stonington, CT. A 1 3/4" chip to underside at edge on reverse with adjacent chip at base on reverse. A small spout chip. A shallow 3/4" chip to side of handle. Some light surface wear.
