Fine and Scarce Four-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Stamped "J.W.S. & CO. / PINE HOUSE, / S.C.," John W. Seigler Pottery, Shaw's Creek, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1860, finely-potted, ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and arching tab handles, the surface covered in a green alkaline glaze with heavy runs to shoulder. Impressed at the shoulder with the mark, "J.W.S. & CO. / PINE HOUSE, S.C.", used at the John W. Seigler Pottery along Shaw's Creek, circa 1860. Additionally incised "4", representing four gallons. This jar exhibits skilled craftsman with a thin-walled construction and appealing glaze. Very nice condition with a 1 1/8" chip to left handle, a minor glazed-over dent near base, and some wear to base, possibly in-the-firing. H 14 1/2".
