Scarce Two-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug with Two-Color Slip Decoration, attributed to the C. Rhodes Factory, Edgefield, SC, circa 1850, highly-ovoid jug with tooled spout and applied strap handle, the surface covered in a streaky greenish alkaline glaze and decorated at the shoulder with a stylized flower blossom or cartouche, featuring an iron-slip interior and a looping border and central number "2" in kaolin slip. Handle terminals with large reddish-brown iron slip decoration. Bold form with strong decoration. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a few very minor base nicks and a minuscule spot of wear to top edge of spout. H 14".
