Unusual Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird Decoration, New York State origin, circa 1870, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird with crest and ringed neck, perched on a leafy branch. Good incised detail to bird's breast and belly. Cobalt highlight to capacity mark. Relatively few incised pieces from this later period of manufacture are known. Large X-shaped crack on reverse extending from base. This crack continues onto underside, where it is restored. A glazed-over iron ping to side of jug. A short glazed-over line at base. A very faint horizontal line at base of handle.
