Rare and Important Shenandoah Valley Multi-Glazed Redware Vase, Stamped Twice "BAECHER / WINCHESTER, VA.", circa 1885, finely-potted vase with ovoid body, footed base, flared rim, and ribbed strap handles, the surface covered in a yellow slip and decorated with streaks of reddish-brown manganese and bright-green copper glazes. Surface covered in a heavy lead glaze with additional dark manganese marbling throughout. Impressed at shoulder on both sides "BAECHER / WINCHESTER, VA". This striking vase features one of the most visually-appealing glazes we have seen on an example of Bacher redware, incorporating daubs of bright-green copper oxide into his classic manganese-over-slip decorative scheme. This three-color treatment, while commonly found in the work of the Bell and Eberly families of Strasburg, VA during the 1890s, is considered rare among known Bacher products. In addition, while Bacher redware pieces frequently succumbed to moderate to significant glaze wear and overall damage, the condition of this vase remains in outstanding, near-original condition with a brilliant luster. Considering the form, glaze, and condition of this example, it easily ranks as one of the finest Bacher redware objects to come to auction in the past decade.
