Rare Salt-Glazed Stoneware Flask with Incised Bird and Foliate Decorations, Northeastern U.S. origin, circa 1820, flattened form with tapered spout, decorated on one side with a folky incised design of a bird with crest and long tail, and on the reverse with an incised stylized plant with long, wavy stem. This flask bears the distinction of serving as the subject of a painting, executed in watercolor, graphite, and gouache, by artist, Yolande Delasser, for the Index of American Design, circa 1936. Delasser's painting of this piece is also pictured on p.122 of the iconic stoneware reference book, Early American Folk Pottery, by Harold F. Guilland. The painting itself currently resides in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. A crack along edge of flask, extending from shoulder to area near base. A 3/4" flake to shoulder. Two minor nicks on interior of spout. H 8".
