Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Floral Decoration, Stamped "I. SEYMOUR & CO. / TROY", New York State origin, circa 1823-1828, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with an elaborate, incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a tulip plant bearing two large blossoms, flanking a central leaf. Design includes heavily-incised detail to the interiors of the flowers' petals. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and lower handle terminal. The tulip design on this jug is unusual among known Israel Seymour products. Provenance: Included in the first stoneware exhibit held at the Museum of American Folk Art in Manhattan, NY, April 18 - June 2, 1974, listed as #25 in the exhibit catalog. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with staining to surface.
