Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, attributed to William Nichols, Poughkeepsie, NY, circa 1823, ovoid jug with tooling to shoulder and spout, decorated with a stylized foliate design with fanned leaves emanating from a turnip-shaped base, a motif most commonly associated with potter, William Nichols, of Poughkeepsie, NY. The form and color of this example are also fairly consistent with Nichols' work. Brushed cobalt highlight to lower handle terminal. Crack on underside, which forms a large Y, with one branch extending onto the jug's reverse and the other extending onto the front of the jug. The large Y-shaped crack includes hairlines which extend off from it, as well as a small sliver of clay missing from the jug's surface on the reverse. A glazed-over spout chip. Two small base chips. Glazed-over iron pings to surface.
