Rare and Fine Half-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Incised Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, probably Crolius Family, early 19th century, finely-potted, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, flared rim, footed base, and open loop handles, decorated on the front with an incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate design with splayed leaves. Reverse with stylized cobalt drape design at the shoulder. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A recessed area to the exterior of rim, corresponding with a thumbprint on the interior, indicates how the potter lifted the jar from the wheel after it was made. Exceptional size and condition. Pieces produced during this time period are very difficult-to-find in such high-grade condition. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with two iron pings. H 7 1/4".
