Rare and Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Foliate Decoration, Stamped "J. REMMEY. / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK," circa 1810, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated on the reverse with a highly-unusual, incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate design with hollow interiors to the petals. This appealing design required delicate application of the cobalt with a fine-tipped brush to keep the centers of the leaves undecorated. The front of the jar includes a brushed cobalt border surrounding the maker's mark of John Remmey, III, along with additional cobalt highlights to the maker's mark and handle terminals. A well-executed example of Remmey stoneware from Manhattan, and the first signed example we have seen featuring this particular incised design. Some fine-grained, innocuous exfoliation to surface. A fairly-tight 3" crack on underside, continuing 6" up side of jar under one handle. A 1 3/4" hairline at base, continuing 1/2" onto underside. A shallow 5/8" base chip and a minor glazed-over base chip. H 11 1/4".
