Exceptional One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Incised Floral Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1790-1805, ovoid jug with footed base, heavily-tooled spout, and applied handle, decorated with a large incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a flowering plant. Decoration includes a distinctive pointed blossom composed of clustered petals, large splayed leaves with heavily-incised veining, and highly-unusual, underdeveloped leaves or roots flanking the base of the stem. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This jug features one of the finest incised floral designs we have ever offered on an example of Manhattan stoneware. Measuring an impressive 7 1/4" tall and executed with an unusual vertical orientation, which closely resembles an actual planted flower, this specific decoration is the first of its kind we have seen. It is complemented by an appealing one-gallon capacity to the jug. Shallow chipping to base. Two hairlines ascending from base, measuring 4" and 3 1/4". Filled and colored 1" chip or hole in underside. H 12".
