Outstanding and Extremely Rare Squat-Formed Stoneware Jar with Open Handles and Incised Foliate Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1800, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled foot, incised banding to shoulder, flared rim, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate motif. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Early 19th century examples of this form are considered exceptionally rare. This jar possibly served as a butter pot. Its wonderful form is met with vivid color and excellent, deeply-incised decoration. Rim chips. A very faint 3" line on side of jar under one handle, partially visible on interior. Two tiny base nicks. H 6 1/4" ; Diameter (across top) 6 7/8".
