Exceptional One-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Impressed Drape Motif, Stamped "COMMERAWS STONEWARE", Thomas Commeraw, Corlears Hook, Manhattan, NY, circa 1800, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and vertically-oriented loop handles with ribbed embellishments, decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed drape-and-tassel motif. Impressed "COMMERAWS" on front and "STONEWARE" on reverse. Cobalt highlights to decoration and maker's mark. With its desirable one-gallon size, appealing light-gray clay, and early vertical-handled form, this example ranks as the finest jar we have ever offered bearing the potter's well-known "COMMERAWS STONEWARE" maker's mark. Minor base wear. Light wear to one handle. Minor wear to opposite handle. Several shallow rim chips. Small worn spots below far left swag on reverse. H 9".
