Exceptional Ten-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Yellow-Slip Floral Decoration, Inscribed "Bayer" and Impressed "1878", Joseph Bayer, Washington, MO, 1878, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, stepped rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed yellow-slip design of a stem bearing a large leaf and hanging flower. Inscribed "Bayer" in yellow slip to right of decoration. Impressed "1878" above. Excellent size, rare inscription, and highly-unusual use of yellow slip. An 11 3/4" crack from rim on reverse. Tight spider lines extending across underside forming cracks at base of jar, the longest extending 5 1/4" up base of jar. The 5 1/4" crack is sealed, and joins two other cracks, forming a wedge. It does not appear, however, that this wedge was ever loose and reattached to the jar. Majority of left handle reglued. H 20".
