Rare Miniature Salesman's Sample Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Ohio origin, possibly Asa E. Spencer, Portage County, Ohio, circa 1850, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a folky brushed design of a flowering plant between a freehand number 6 and stylized spotted design. Brushed stripe below rim. Cobalt highlights to front handle terminals. Albany-slip-glazed interior. The decoration and clay body of this example are similar to pieces bearing the mark "A.E. SPENCER" and made by Asa E. Spencer of Portage County, Ohio. A darkened 3/4" rim chip. A thin 2 1/4" crack from rim on reverse. H 4 1/8".
