Extremely Rare Shenandoah Valley of Virginia Stoneware Mug with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, probably Rockingham County, VA, circa 1860-1880, large-sized, cylindrical form with tooled shoulder and applied handle, decorated with a brushed graduated swag and vine motif. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Color and decoration are consistent with pieces produced by a number of potters in Rockingham County, Virginia, including Emmanuel Suter and Joseph Silber. Few cobalt-decorated mugs from the state of Virginia are known. Chip or in-the-firing iron ping to rim. Otherwise excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 6 1/4".
