Shenandoah Valley Multi-Glazed Redware Wall Pocket with Applied Bird, attributed to J. Eberly & Co., Strasburg, VA, circa 1890, wheel-thrown form with footed base, coggled rim, and applied scrolled handle, the front decorated with a hand-modeled and applied figure of a bird flanking by a molded motif of a hand holding a rose. Decorated above with a molded and applied clamshell. Surface decorated with splashed green copper and reddish-brown manganese over a cream-colored slip ground, and covered in a clear lead glaze. This example includes the desirable molded hand-with-rose and clamshell motifs associated with Strasburg's J. Eberly & Co. Pottery, and features excellent color. Upper half of bird is professionally-restored. Otherwise excellent condition with a few minor glaze flakes. H 7 1/4".
