Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Jr with Elaborate Flowering Urn Decoration, attributed to Henry Harrison Remmey, Philadelphia, PA circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and heavy lug handles, decorated on the front with a large design of a cross-hatched urn with scrolled handles and flowering plant emanating from the center. Decorated above with a flowering vine extending from handle to handle. Reverse with similar horizontal decoration. Brushed swags under each handle along with heavy cobalt highlights to the handle terminals. The inclusion of an urn at the base of the decoration is highly unusual for this maker. The design is the first of its type we have seen from Henry Harrison Remmey. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a long, faint diagonal surface line on reverse, extending from shoulder to side of jar. This faint line is not visible on the interior and was probably created in-the-firing.
