Rare Large-Sized Stoneware Chicken Waterer with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to the Richard C. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1875, cylindrical form with watering trough at front, applied lug handles, and heavily-tooled top with rounded finial. Surface with profuse cobalt decoration including tulips and leaves around the hooded watering trough, large tulips and swags under each handle, and a large tulip on the reverse. Front of waterer includes a cobalt-highlighted cross above a Roman numeral "I". Exceptional size and wonderful decoration. One of the finest examples of this desirable form we have ever offered. C-shaped surface line to shoulder on front. A glazed-over chip to one handle. Some innocuous, tight surface crazing to shoulder, probably in-the-firing. A 2" horizontal crack extending from edge of left side of trough. A 1 1/2" horizontal crack along bottom edge of trough. A base chip on reverse. H 12".
