Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "F.J. CAIRE, / Huntington, / L.I.", circa 1854-1863, squat-shaped, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout and applied handle, decorated with a brushed tulip extending from a curved stem. Brushed number 2 above. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Literature: Pictured on p. 40, fig. 39 of USEFUL ART: LONG ISLAND POTTERY, Cynthia Arps Corbett, Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, 1985. A large, semi-circular in-the-firing separation line on underside, curving around the outer edge of the jug's underside. A small iron ping to front. A minor spout nick.
