Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Large Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "F.J. CAIRE / Huntington, / L.I.", circa 1854-1863, ovoid form with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with two large tulips emanating from a central stem with spotted leaves at base. Incised with a freehand number 5 below maker's mark. Desirable, size, form, decoration, and maker. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Very large, probably excessive, restoration on reverse, extending from the rim nearly to the base. A small chip to interior of rim. A tiny nick to inner rim for lid.
