Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Cobalt Butterfly Decoration, Stamped "LEWIS / HUNTINGTON", Long Island, New York origin, circa 1830-1854, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, tall collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed stylized butterfly with spotted wings. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Appealing form, color, and decoration, featuring a scarce Huntington maker's mark. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Literature: Illustrated on page 38, fig. 36 of USEFUL ART Long Island Pottery, Cynthia Aarps Corbett, Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, 1985. Of this jar, Corbett writes, "The quality of cobalt decoration on Huntington stoneware generally declined during the Lewis' ownership. Potters ornamented their wares with brush strokes of floral designs which appear hastily done. One exception is the brushed design of a butterfly on a pot produced by the Lewis firm" (Corbett, p. 38). Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a minor 2" area of glazed-over chipping to base.
