Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Inscription "S S / K S", Stamped "BROWN BROTHER , / HUNTINGTON, / L.I.", circa 1870-1885, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with the slip-trailed initials, "S S / K S", flanked by foliate motifs. This crock was presumably made as a presentation piece, possibly for a wedding. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Additional Brown Brothers maker's mark and two-gallon capacity mark on reverse. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Literature: Pictured on p. 44, fig. 50 of USEFUL ART: LONG ISLAND POTTERY, Cynthia Arps Corbett, Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, 1985. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with an in-the-firing base chip on reverse.
