Exceedingly Rare and Important Molded Stoneware Coffeepot, Stamped "D. & J. HENDERSON / Jersey City", circa 1829-1833, finely-molded pitcher with relief bearded satyr's head, scrollwork, and acanthus leaf motifs to body and grapevine motif to shoulder. Handle in the form of a satyr with reed pipe and staff. Goose-neck spout with griffin's-head tip and acanthus-leaf base. Underside impressed with a circular "D. & J. HENDERSON / Jersey City" maker's mark, in which the impression is reversed. Impressed beside maker's mark with an asterisk, the letter Y, and two small hash marks. The coffeepot form is not only one of great visual appeal, but is also exceedingly rare for this maker. Pieces produced at this short-lived manufactory represent some of the finest molded ware produced in 19th century America. A coffeepot of identical form and maker's mark is in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum in Brooklyn, NY. Missing lid. Otherwise remarkable, excellent condition with a few tiny base nicks. H 9 1/2".
