Very Rare Cold-Painted Redware Spaniel on Base, Stamped "SPEESE & SON / GETTYSBURG, PA", Henry and Charles Speese, Gettysburg, PA, circa 1885, molded figure of a spaniel seated on an ornamental base with scalloped edge and relief scrolled embellishment. Incised details to face and feet. Dog with original gold-painted surface and red-and-white accents to eyes and muzzle. Original silver paint to base. Impressed on edge with scarce "SPEESE & SON / GETTYSBURG, PA" maker's mark. A small impressed "8." appears below this stamp. Few signed Speese dogs are known. The mold employed to create them is very similar in style to those used in Western Pennsylvania to create stoneware and tanware examples. Provenance: Purchased in the 1970s from a descendant in the Speese family by the consignor's mother. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with two minor base chips. Painted surface survives in remarkable, excellent condition. H 9 1/4".
