Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Lid and Exuberant Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped Twice "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'", PA origin, circa 1850-1880, cylindrical form with footed base, squared rim, and large lug handles, the front and reverse decorated with a boldly-brushed vine bearing open tulip blossoms with dotted stamens. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed with John Bell maker's mark under each handle. Excellent color with vivid cobalt applied over a whitish, slip-coated ground. Includes original lid with cobalt swag decoration, stamped on underside with John Bell maker's mark. With its impressive size and outstanding decoration, this cake crock is the finest John Bell example we have ever offered. 7" crack from rim on reverse. A few minor chips on interior of rim. Lid with a small chip to bottom edge and a faint 3" line on top surface, not visible on underside and presumably in-the-firing. H (to top of lid) 9 3/4" ; Diameter 11 3/4".
