Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "HARRISBURG, PA / COWDEN & WILCOX," circa 1865, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout and applied handle, the front decorated with a brushed cobalt design of a man's face with open mouth, facing a brushed number "2" and surrounded by crescent-shaped foliate decoration. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, an impressed two-gallon capacity mark, and handle terminals. This example is unusual in its depiction of the man-in-the-moon motif with an open mouth, the use of a brushed capacity designation, and in its reversed maker's mark, in which "HARRISBURG, PA" is impressed above the firm name "COWDEN & WILCOX". Essentially as-made condition with some fry to cobalt and two very minor chips to bottom edge of jug, which appear to have occurred in the firing.
