Fine Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Bellarmine Jug with Ropetwist Handle, probably Frechen, Germany, 16th or 17th century, highly-ovoid form with heavily-tooled spout, decorated on the neck with a raised bearded mask above three raised coat-of-arm medallions. Handle composed of twisted strands of clay resembling rope. Cobalt highlights to applied decoration. Streaks of iron-oxide slip throughout. This jug was salvaged underwater and includes barnacles to the coat-of-arms on the right side. Provenance: Skinner Auctions, July 5, 2006; Ex-Coil Collection. Jug survives in excellent condition with minor base chips and a very minor spout chip. H 7 1/4".
