Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Double-Bird Decoration, Stamped "W.A. MACQUOID & CO. / POTTERY WORKS. / LITTLE 12TH ST / NEW YORK", circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an elaborate brushed figural design of a rooster and a duck, both with turned heads, strutting atop a grassy lawn. A wonderful decoration featuring two different types of poultry on the same piece. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Significant restoration to surface of crock, including much of front. A glazed-over loss and small post-firing chip to one handle. A hairline on underside.
