Rare Three-Gallon Cortland, NY Stoneware Cream Jar with Cobalt Inscription and 1867 Date, Madison Woodruff and Romanzo Smith, Cortland, NY, 1867, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with the slip-trailed cobalt inscription "Cortland / N.Y. / 3 Gallons / 1867". Relatively few examples of Cortland stoneware feature inscribed words. Rim chips. Some water glass staining to surface. Two large in-the-firing chips to underside at edge, caused when the jar adhered to kiln furniture or another object during the firing. The larger chip measures 3 1/2" long. Some blurriness to cobalt.
