Outstanding Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "C.W. BRAUN / BUFFALO N.Y.", circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a wonderful slip-trailed design of a daisy plant with spotted, striped, and shaded embellishments to the blossoms and leaves. The thick application of the cobalt slip imparts a three-dimensional quality to the design, and the heavily-detailed blossoms create an almost kaleidoscopic effect with strong folk art appeal. This crock is the finest example of Braun floral decoration we have ever offered. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Some light exfoliation to side and reverse. Fairly-tight, jagged crack extending from rim to left flower. Small iron ping near base on front. Thin, approximately 5" crack from rim on reverse. Two in-the-firing chips to interior of rim. Some light staining. H 13 3/8".
