Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "F LAUFERSWEILER / EMPIRE CITY POTTERY / 517 & 519 W 27. ST. NY", circa 1880, semi-ovoid jar with flared rim and applied lug handles, decorated with an elaborate floral decoration of three tulips extending from a central stem. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Pieces bearing this New York City maker's mark are considered difficult-to-find. Large area of restoration to bottom half of jar on reverse. Restored hole in center of underside. A small handle chip. Some typical small chips and nicks to inner rim, where a lid would rest, some of which have been painted.
