Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Foliate and Tornado Decoration, MA origin, third quarter 19th century, large-sized, cylindrical jug with flared spout and applied handle, decorated with a large brushed and slip-trailed design of a tornado embellished with spots and flanked by leaves. Decorated above with a looping line design accented with spots. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Includes wooden stopper. Two spout chips, one with a short hairline descending from it. An additional, small U-shaped surface line in top of spout.
