Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Chicken Pecking Corn Decoration, Stamped "E & L P NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT", circa 1870, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a fat-bodied chicken pecking kernels of corn from a stylized ground. Decoration includes heavy cobalt dashes throughout the bird's body. This motif is one of the finest designs employed at the Norton Factory during this period of production. Chicken decorations used during this period feature a folkier, fuller body and heavier detail than those produced during the "J. & E. NORTON" and "J. NORTON & CO." periods. A 1 1/2" loss and small chip to left handle. Minor chips to inner rim ledge where a lid would rest.
