Scarce and Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Double-Bird Decoration, Stamped "WHITE'S UTICA", New York State origin, circa 1865, semi-ovoid jug with tapered spout and applied handle, decorated with a slip-trailed design of two birds with long beaks and turned heads, perched on the stems of a flowering plant. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent color and contrast, artistic design, and crisp slip-trailing. Excellent condition with a 2 1/4" spider line to shoulder and a 1 3/4" inverted Y-shaped line emanating from a tiny stone ping on reverse.
