Excellent Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Stamped "O.L. & A.K. BALLARD / BURLINGTON, VT", circa 1865, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large brushed design of a grape cluster hanging from a leafy vine. Excellent form, size, and decoration. The grapes design on this churn measures an outstanding 10 1/2" long. Heavy chipping to interior of rim and inner rim, which would hold a lid. Thin 2 1/4" crack from rim on side of churn. Large sideways T-shaped crack extending from reverse to right edge of decoration, including a small sliver missing along crack. A large, fairly-thin fork-shaped crack to body on reverse. H 18".
